Why is it that the Erie Canal gets so little attention in our schools today? To me the reason is that the subject is too large. Teachers have to know too much to give the subject justice, and so students are left without knowing much if anything about it at all. This course gives every teacher a chance to remedy that. It's not an hour long lecture: It's a buffet of individual topics designed to be used by a teacher whose strengths lie elsewhere. See it as your "expert partner" on the Erie Canal. Listen to a clip while you gather your thoughts, then invite comments and questions before moving on to the next clip. You will LOVE teaching this class!

I'm neither a historian nor an engineer. What I did bring to this was ten years digging level trenches near the western section of the Erie Canal in my backhoe business in the 1980s. I've fought with the same frozen ground, shallow bedrock and massive tree roots that these guys did between 1817 and 1825.
